Solid Waste, Recycling, Bulk Waste and Debris Removal for Town of Davie Residents

Hurricane Irma Advisory #29

Regular Solid Waste Collection: 

Collection has resumed for residential, commercial and multi-family pick-up according to the regular schedule.


Recycling service will resume on Monday, September 18, 2017.

Bulk Waste: 

Residential bulk service is suspended for the month of September. Please do not put out bulk waste as it will delay storm debris removal and hamper power restoration efforts.

The Waste Management bulk drop off facility located at 2380 College Avenue will resume its normal operations for residential drop off Saturday, September 16, 2017.

HHW, Electronics and Textile Recycling:

The Town of Davie Household Hazardous Waste (HHW), Electronics and Textile Recycling and Drug Collection Event originally scheduled for Sunday, September 10, 2017 was postponed due to Hurricane Irma.

The event is rescheduled for Sunday, October 1, 2017, at Pine Island Park (Bamford Sports Complex), 3801 S. Pine Island Road. The HHW and Electronics and Textile Recycling event will be held from 8 a.m. to 4 p.m. For more information, please contact Sun Bergeron at 954-680-6100.

The free Drug Collection event will be held from 8 a.m. to 1 p.m. Before disposal, please remove all labels with personal information from bottles.

Acceptable items:

  • Prescription and over the counter medications
  • Vitamins
  • Pet medicines

Unacceptable Items:

  • Needles/sharps
  • Liquids
  • Gels
  • Aerosols
  • Radioactive chemotherapy Medications

Debris Removal:

The storm generated a large amount of debris and the cleanup operation will take some time to be fully completed and as such we are asking for your patience as we work as quickly as possible to restore the Town and to keep emergency access routes open for police, fire rescue and FPL.

The Town anticipates starting storm debris removal the week of September 18.  Debris pickup will start with the highest priority areas such as main roadways and areas affecting access to critical facilities.  Once the larger and critical roadways are cleared we will begin debris removal on the local roads.

Please note the following information for public and private roadways:

  • Debris removal-public roads: Town crews have been actively clearing public roads since Monday, September 11. There is a tremendous amount of storm debris on the roads so please be patient and careful when driving through Town. Debris should be placed as close to the edge of the street as possible. Do not cover storm drains or block fire hydrants. 
  • Debris removal-private roads: On Wednesday, September 20, 2017, Town of Davie staff will begin the evaluation process for debris along private development and gated community roadways resulting from Hurricane Irma. The Town must seek prior approval from FEMA to initiate the storm debris removal process from private roads.  This process includes the submission of extensive documentation for consideration.  Presently, we do not have a specific timeframe for a response from FEMA nor can we anticipate an approval.  As such, if private communities desire to have storm debris removal sooner, communities can do so utilizing their own funding without reimbursement.

How to Manage Your Debris:

  • All storm related landscaping debris should be placed in a pile on your property’s swale, which generally is the first five (5) to ten (10) feet of property adjacent to the roadway.
  • Tree debris such as branches and tree trunks should be cut into sections no longer than six (6) feet in length and piled neatly together.
  • You should contact your local landscape company/contractor for assistance with cutting and bringing the larger landscaping material to the swale should you need help.  Please ensure that any company that you hire is licensed and insured for your protection.
  • Bags of leaves and very small branches will not be picked up with the larger landscaping debris and should be placed in your trash container.
  • Any other storm related non-landscaping debris such as fencing, metal, roof materials, etc., should also be brought to the swale and placed in a pile separate from the landscaping vegetation.
  • Under no circumstances should any garbage or bagged materials be mixed with the debris piles. They will not be picked up.
  • Please do not put regular bulk waste as part of the storm debris pickup as it will not be picked up.
  • Please do not park vehicles in the roadways as they will impede the ability for the large debris removal trucks to access the area for cleanup.  Vehicles must be removed from the roadway to keep access points open, or they will be removed as necessary.  Please do not cover drainage structures as this will interrupt stormwater and may cause standing water in your community. Also, please do not place debris piles and garbage containers near trees, poles, mailboxes, fire hydrants, drains or other structures as this will make removal efforts difficult and cause damage to existing infrastructure.  Additional information will be provided in the future including anticipated pickup days.
