TOWN OF DAVIE HONORS DR. MARTIN LUTHER KING, JR.

Featuring celebration, poetry contest information and town closures   

DAVIE, Fla. – In honor of Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr.’s legacy, the Town of Davie will be hosting its annual Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. Celebration on Sunday, Jan. 16, 2022, at 1 p.m. The free event will occur at Pine Island Park/Bamford Sports Complex, 3801 S. Pine Island Rd. 

The ceremony will feature poetry contest readings, live entertainment and light refreshments. Speakers include Mayor Judy Paul, Town Councilmembers and Rick Caldwell, CEO of RCultures.  

Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. Poetry Contest

The town invites Davie students in elementary, middle or high school to participate in the Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. poetry contest. To participate, poems must feature Dr. King’s values of peace, love, unity, concerns for humanity and non-violence. 

All entries must be submitted to the Town of Davie via the online registration form at www.davie-fl.gov/poetrycontest by Jan. 10, 2022, at 4 p.m. Winners will be announced during the ceremony.

Town of Davie Closures

In observance of Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. Day, the Town of Davie municipal offices will be closed on Monday, Jan. 17, 2022. Municipal offices will resume regular operation on Tuesday, Jan. 18, 2022. 

Please take note of the following Parks, Recreation and Cultural Arts facility hours below. 

  • Pine Island Fitness Center will open from 5 a.m. to 8:45 p.m. 
  • Pine Island Aquatic Center will open from 5 a.m. to 8 p.m. 
  • Pine Island Multipurpose Center will be closed.
  • Programmed sports activities will not be performed on this day.
  • Town parks will be open from 9 a.m. to sunset. With the exception of:
  • Driftwood, Shenandoah, Waterford and Waverly Park will close at 9 p.m. 
  • Pine Island Park/Bamford Sports Complex will close at 10 p.m. 

Solid Waste Services

There will be no change to the solid waste service operations on Monday, Jan. 17, 2022.
