Home Rule Hero-2

Awarded by Florida League of Cities

DAVIE, Fla. – In recognition of advocating for the Town of Davie’s Home Rule during the 2021 Legislative Session, Councilmember Susan Starkey was presented the Home Rule Hero award by the Florida League of Cities on June 3, 2021.

The Florida League of Cities Home Rule Hero Award recipients are local government officials – both elected and nonelected – who consistently respond to the League’s request to reach out to members of the legislature and help give a local perspective on an issue.

As the Town Councilmember of District 3, Starkey holds over 30 years of experience as a public servant, community volunteer activist, and an advocate for education and the environment. She was elected in March 2001 and remains the longest serving councilmember in the Town of Davie.

“It is truly my honor to serve our Town at any capacity possible,” said Starkey. “Fighting for what’s right will always be my utmost priority, and I only have our residents to thank – it is them that make it all worth it.”

Home Rule is the ability for a municipality to address local problems with local solutions with minimal state interference. The Florida League of Cities presents the Home Rule Hero Award to outstanding advocates who protect the home rule rights of municipal constituents and citizens throughout the state.

“These local officials went above and beyond during the 2021 Legislative Session,” said FLC Director of Legislative Affairs Casey Cook. “They made an extraordinary effort, were actively engaged and highly effective in their advocacy efforts. Even with all the various challenges present this year due to the pandemic, they stepped up. They engaged with legislators, shared their stories and made their voices heard, and it made a difference. On behalf of the League and its legislative team, it’s my sincere honor to recognize this year’s award recipients and thank them for their service.”
