Broward County Opens Additional Shelters

Hurricane Irma Advisory #13

The existing Broward County shelters are nearing capacity. The County has opened additional shelters to assist residents who are in need of shelter before Hurricane Irma begins impacting South Florida. All persons in South Florida should take shelter by early Saturday morning.   


Additional open shelters are:


Tradewinds Elementary School - 5400 Johnson Rd, Coconut Creek, FL 33073Silver Palm Elementary School - 1209 NW 155th Ave, Pembroke Pines, FL 33028Everglades Elementary School - 2900 Bonaventure Blvd, Weston, FL 33331


General Shelter Information:

Residents who choose to evacuate to a shelter are reminded that shelter only provides basic needs and they should bring the following to make their stay more comfortable:

  • Personal hygiene items  
  • Bedding such as cots, air mattresses, blankets and pillows for their own use (none will be provided)  
  • Non-perishable snacks and personal meals 
  • Extra change of clothing 
  • Personal items (medications, eyeglasses, hearing aid, flashlights, toothbrushes, battery-operated radio, special diet foods, if appropriate) 
  • Baby supplies: ample amounts of baby food, formula, juice, diapers and wipes, and a stroller, portable crib or play pen 
  • Driver's license, other identification 
  • Cash, traveler's checks 
  • Important documents

The Pick Up Points are:

  • Corner of N 21 Ave & Lincoln St., Hollywood, FL (East of railroad tracks)
  • Corner of N 21 Ave & Sherman St., Hollywood, FL (East of railroad tracks)
  • Salvation Army, 1445 W. Broward Blvd., Fort Lauderdale, FL
  • Pompano Beach City Hall, 100 W. Atlantic Blvd., Pompano Beach, FL

Pet Friendly Shelter Open:

Broward County has opened a second Pet Friendly shelter. The shelter is located at Everglades High School located at 17100 SW 48th Ct, Miramar, FL 33027. The shelter began accepting residents at 1:00 p.m.


Pet Survival Kit:

Recommended items for a pet survival kit include:


§  A crate or carrier large enough for the animal to stand and turn around (use a treat or toy to help pets adjust to the carrier beforehand)


§  Leashes and collars


§  Two week supply of food (moist or canned) with manual can opener


§  Two week supply of bottled water


§  Water and food dishes


§  Cat litter, litter pan and puppy training pads


§  Favorite toys, blankets and treats


§  Emergency phone numbers for veterinarian, animal shelters and friends/relatives


§  Veterinary clinic address and phone number


§  Veterinary records with rabies certificate and current Broward County license tag number


§  Medications with instructions


§  Cleaning supplies (newspaper, plastic bags with ties, paper towels, disinfectant), litter scooper


§  A photo of you and your pet together (to help prove the pet is yours), and one with the pet by itself, showing any distinguishing marks that will help with identification
