FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE

SEPTEMBER 23, 2020

TOWN OF DAVIE, BROWARD LEAGUE OF CITIES, AND BROWARD COUNTY CITY MANAGERS’ ASSOCIATION LEAD INITIATIVE TO EDUCATE THE PUBLIC ABOUT CHARTER AMENDMENT TWO

Broward County, FL – The Town of Davie, in collaboration with the Broward League of Cities (BLOC) and the Broward County City Managers’ Association (BCCMA), is launching an educational initiative to inform Broward County residents about County Charter Amendment #2 that will appear on the November 2020 ballot. The initiative, Uncover Broward County Amendment Two, kicks off today countywide.

The proposed amendment, if approved, would give Broward County the power to supersede municipal zoning and regulatory authority for projects on county properties that are funded in whole or in part by funds from the transportation surtax, even if the projects fall within municipal borders.

“Across Broward County, our residents rely on their local municipal leaders to manage our Home Rule authority to ensure projects meet zoning, architectural, landscaping, and aesthetic standards,” said Town of Davie Mayor Judy Paul. “If approved, this amendment would ignore the standards the Town has taken years to develop in cooperation with its community and residents.”

“Before residents make a decision regarding the charter amendment, I encourage them to reach out to their city officials and learn more about Home Rule which allows municipalities local authority and power to regulate and enact ordinances, codes, plans, and resolutions within the city in which they were elected,” said City of Hollywood Commissioner Traci Callari, President of the Broward League of Cities.

In response, both organizations, along with the municipalities throughout the County, have worked collectively to better ensure voters have a clear explanation of the amendment and explain how this will impact each municipality in Broward County.  The educational efforts will include social media outreach, mailings, public service announcements, videos, and a speaker’s bureau.

“As the voice for the Broward County City Management, it is our job to ensure residents are educated on this amendment,” said Greg Harrison, City of Pompano Beach City Manager, President of the BCCMA
