TROPICAL STORM ISAIAS UPDATE #2:

SOUTH FLORIDA PLACED UNDER A TROPICAL STORM WATCH; LANDSCAPING AND SOLID/BULK WASTE

DAVIE, Fla. - The Town of Davie Emergency Management officials are continuing to monitor Tropical Storm Isaias. As of the 5 p.m. advisory, the National Hurricane Center has issued a Tropical Storm Watch for the Southeast Florida coast including Broward County. A Tropical Storm Watch means that tropical storm conditions are possible within the watch area, generally within 48 hours. Tropical Storm Isaias is strengthening and is expected to develop into a Category 1 hurricane by tomorrow.

If Tropical Storm Isaias’ current forecast and track remain steady, Broward County may begin experiencing heavy rainfall, storm surge, and possible tropical storm-force winds as early as Saturday afternoon.

Residents are encouraged to take this time to finalize their personal storm preparations:

  • Review your family disaster plan.
  • Have at least one gallon of water per person, per day for three to five days, preferably two weeks. Extra water is needed for food preparation and personal hygiene.
  • Enough food for three to five days, including non-perishable packaged or canned food, canned or shelf milk, cereal, etc., ice and snack foods.
  • Three-to five-day supply of special items for babies such as formula, food, wipes, diapers; special foods for the elderly; toiletries and extra toilet paper.
  • Flashlight with extra batteries
  • First-aid kit and wet wipes
  • Battery-powered radio with extra batteries
  • A two-week supply of any medication needed.
  • Pet food, cat litter and other pet care items
  • Any special personal protective equipment or items you may need.
  • Review the Town’s hurricane preparedness guide for more information.

Landscaping and Solid/Bulk Waste

Residents should refrain from cutting trees or doing additional landscaping projects until after this storm passes. Solid/commingled and recyclable materials should be properly secured in a safe, sheltered location. In addition, please do not place your bulk waste curbside (green schedule) for next week until the storm has passed.

Avoid Flood Dangers

  • Do not walk through or allow children to play in standing water. Puddles are full of hidden dangers, including snakes and other wildlife, broken glass, and other sharp objects.
  • Do not drive through standing water. Your car engine may stall, potentially causing irreparable damage to the engine. The wake from your car may cause additional flooding in nearby homes and other structures. If you come upon a flooded street, take an alternate route.

Pet Preparedness

Pet owners and owners of large animals, such as horses, sheep, and cattle, are reminded to review their preparedness plans and take appropriate steps to ensure animals are protected from these potential impacts.

  • Ensure your pet has at least a two-week supply of food and water, packed in a waterproof container.
  • Gather veterinary documents, including proof of current rabies vaccination and Broward County pet registration tag. In the event your pet becomes lost, the tag confirms your ownership so you can be contacted and reunited with your pet.
  • Have a current photograph of your pet.
  • Designate an area in the house or garage for your pet’s bathroom needs.
