Broward County Opens Shelters and Issues Mandatory Evacuation for Mobile Homes, Coastal Areas, and Low Lying Areas

Hurricane Irma Advisory #3

Broward County has issued a mandatory evacuation for mobile homes, coastal areas, and low lying areas effective tomorrow, Thursday, September 7, 2017 at 12:00 p.m. The County will also be opening 14 emergency evacuation shelters effective tomorrow, Thursday, September 7, 2017 at 12:00 p.m. The Town recommends that residents evacuate to a family member or friend’s home that has been built to withstand hurricanes. If a resident is unable to do this, then he or she should evacuate to one of the shelters.

Special Needs Shelter Information:

Broward County will be opening special needs shelters starting tomorrow, Thursday, September 7, 2017 at 12:00 p.m. Residents already registered for special needs sheltering are being contacted directly. Those residents who have not preregistered, but have a managed medical condition or disability who feel they need a level of care that may be compromised with power outages if they remain at home, should call the Broward County Emergency Hotline at 311, or 954-831-4000, for assistance.

Those who are evacuating to a special needs shelter are reminded to:

  • Place identification labels on any medical support equipment such as wheelchairs, walkers and nebulizers.
  • Bring all prescription and non-prescription medications
  • Have a Personal Support Network contact list which includes phone numbers of family members and friends.
  • Personal Information Card with health information including insurance policy numbers, hospital preference, current medications and medical condition.

General Shelter Information:

Residents who choose to evacuate to a shelter are reminded that shelter only provides basic needs and they should bring the following to make their stay more comfortable:

  • Personal hygiene items
  • Bedding such as cots, air mattresses, blankets and pillows for their own use (none will be provided)
  • Non-perishable snacks and personal meals
  • Extra change of clothing
  • Personal items (medications, eyeglasses, hearing aid, flashlights, toothbrushes, battery-operated radio, special diet foods, if appropriate)
  • Baby supplies: ample amounts of baby food, formula, juice, diapers and wipes, and a stroller, portable crib or play pen
  • Driver's license, other identification
  • Cash, traveler's checks
  • Important documents

South Florida Water Management District:

The South Florida Water Management District is at increased readiness for Hurricane Irma. Water managers are closely monitoring the major hurricane for potential flooding impacts to South Florida.

In preparation, water managers are working around the clock to lower regional canals and make adjustments to water control structures as needed to move any stormwater from Irma as quickly and safely as possible. They are also closely coordinating with local drainage districts and governments that operate local canal systems. Field station staff are inspecting key parts of the flood control system and ensuring adequate supplies of fuel and equipment for pump stations.
