TOWN OF DAVIE INTRODUCES SKYWARN STORM SPOTTER PROGRAM

Davie, Fla. - The Town of Davie in partnership with the National Weather Service encourages all Davie residents with an interest in public service to join its inaugural SKYWARN Storm Spotter Program.

Individuals interested in participating will learn how to identify potential severe weather in their area, how to report information, and how to stay safe before, during and after a storm.

Senior Forecaster Anthony Reynes with the National Weather Service in Miami will be in attendance as a Skywarn Instructor. He will be explaining meteorological terminology, how to understand different cloud formations and storms, and how to accurately report different weather phenomena. This includes hail, tornados, damaging wind, flash flooding, and snowfall.

“It’s not often we can provide residents with this one-of-a-kind of training,” Emergency Manager John Antapasis said. “Not only will it give attendees a new skill set, but those who complete the course will also become a vital part of the National Weather Service warning system.”

This free training will take place on Monday, November 18, 2019, from 6-8 p.m.Davie Fire Rescue Administration Building located at 6901 Orange Drive. Anyone interested in attending must contact John Antapasis at 954-797-1207 or email him at jantapasis@davie-fl.govto reserve a seat. Space is limited.

About SKYWARN®

SKYWARN® is a volunteer program with approximately 350,000 and 400,000 trained severe weather spotters. These volunteers help keep their local communities safe by providing timely and accurate reports of severe weather to the National Weather Service.

Since the program started in the 1970s, the information provided by SKYWARN® spotters, coupled with Doppler radar technology, improved satellite and other data, has enabled NWS to issue more timely and accurate warnings for tornadoes, severe thunderstorms and flash floods. SKYWARN® storm spotters are citizens who form the nation's first line of defense against severe weather.
