TROPICAL STORM WATCH ISSUED FOR BROWARD COUNTY
HURRICANE DORIAN ADVISORY #10
DAVIE, Fla. – Hurricane Dorian is now a Category 5 hurricane with sustained winds of over 160 mph. As a result, the National Weather Service placed Broward County under a Tropical Storm Watch. A Tropical Storm Watch is issued when a tropical cyclone containing winds of 39-73 miles per hour or higher poses a possible threat, generally within 48 hours. These winds may be accompanied by storm surge, coastal flooding and/or river flooding. A watch does not mean that tropical storm conditions will occur; it only means that these conditions are possible.
With Hurricane Dorian’s unpredictability, residents are reminded not to focus on the exact forecast track of the storm since strong winds and heavy rainfall extend well away from the center. The Town of Davie’s resident hotline, 954-797-1122, is now activated and will be updated continuously to provide information to our residents.
Shelter Information:
Broward County shelters are prepared and ready to open as needed. At this time, there are no plans to open general population shelters, including pet friendly shelters. This is subject to change pending weather conditions. However, due to the possibility of power outages, which place special needs residents at risk, Broward County will be opening three special needs adult shelters and one pediatric special needs shelter at 2PM today. Broward County is still accepting applications for special needs residents. To register, call the Emergency Hotline at 311 or 954-831-4000.
Solid Waste Services:
- Due to the conditions that are anticipated from Hurricane Dorian, the Town and Waste Management have suspended garbage and recycling services for Monday, September 2, 2019 and Tuesday, September 3, 2019.
- Bulk pickup is cancelled for Monday, September 2 through Saturday, September 7, 2019. Residents should not put bulk items out at this time. Bulk items left out as the storm approaches, can become harmful projectiles in high winds. The Town’s Code Compliance inspectors will issue citations to homeowners who place bulk items both curbside and on the swale.
- Solid/commingled and recyclable materials and carts should be properly secured in a safe, sheltered location.
Parks:
Town of Davie parks will remain open until the weather permits.
The Town of Davie is continuing to urge residents to take all necessary preparations for potential impacts from Hurricane Dorian.
