UPDATE: Several Areas of County to be Sprayed to Reduce Mosquito Larvae
The preventive truck larviciding originally scheduled for July 15 - August 3, 2019, has been rescheduled to July 22 - August 10.
BROWARD COUNTY, Fla.- Recent heavy rains are prompting the need for the Mosquito Control Section to spray several areas of the County to reduce the mosquito larvae population. The mosquito being targeted is Aedes aegypti, a known disease-carrying mosquito. Preventative truck larviciding will be proactively performed between the hours of 10 PM and 6 AM, weather permitting, on July 22 - August 10. The areas being targeted are portions of Pembroke Pines, Davie, Dania Beach, Fort Lauderdale, Cooper City, and Hollywood. See below for maps of the spray areas.
Residents and business owners are encouraged to survey their property frequently to remove any standing water in common mosquito habitats such as buckets, tires, planters, birdbaths, fountains etc. By reducing the number of mosquito habitats, residents are also reducing the likelihood of mosquito breeding, getting mosquito bites and potentially contracting diseases.
The larvicide being used is VectoBac WDG. It is not harmful to humans, pets, bees, aquatic habitats or environmentally sensitive areas. The active ingredient is Bacillus thuringiensis israelensis (Bti, strain AM6552), a naturally occurring, biodegradable bacterial mosquito larvicide. It is certified by the Organic Materials Review Institute (OMRI) and is registered for use by the US Environmental Protection Agency. In addition, VectoBac WDG has been reviewed by the World Health Organization and is listed as a recommended formulation for control of mosquito larvae.
People living in the targeted areas who have registered with the State will be notified 24 hours prior to spraying.
Broward County Mosquito Control Section continues to work closely with the Florida Department of Health and Code Enforcement partners in Broward's 31 municipalities to reduce the population of mosquitoes and their habitats.
Any Broward County resident experiencing mosquito problems can request service by calling 311 or by completing the online Mosquito Service Request Form.
