DAVIE PARTNERS WITH HARD ROCK FOR A HUMAN TRAFFICKING AWARENESS CAMPAIGN
Hard Rock Guitar will light up blue on January 11 from 8 to 9 p.m.
DAVIE, Fla. – The Town of Davie is partnering with the Seminole Hard Rock Hotel Casino, Hollywood, FL, in recognition of National Human Trafficking Awareness Day on Wednesday, Jan. 11. Between 8 and 9 p.m., tonight, the Hard Rock Casino’s Guitar will light up blue in recognition of National Human Trafficking Awareness Day which is recognized on January 11 each year. The color blue is a way to show support for the campaign.
January is Human Trafficking Awareness month and during the January 4, 2023, Town Council Meeting, the Mayor and the Town Council read a Proclamation into the record which reinforces the Town’s support in protecting the victims’ rights, acknowledges the physical and emotional trauma they have suffered and strengthen the goal to eradicate Human Trafficking.
The Town has a continuous partnership with the Soroptimist International of Davie to bring awareness to Human Trafficking. The organization works with middle and high schoolers to alert and educate them about this serious issue in our community.
Everyone has a role to play in strengthening our stance against Human Trafficking. The U.S. Department of State has provided some signs to be on the lookout for and how you can do your part to protect those who are being targeted.
While not an exhaustive list, these are some key red flags that could alert you to a potential trafficking situation that should be reported:
- Living with employer
- Poor living conditions
- Multiple people in a cramped space
- Inability to speak to individual alone
- Answers appear to be scripted and rehearsed
- Employer is holding identity documents
- Signs of physical abuse
- Submissive or fearful
- Unpaid or paid very little
- Under 18 and in prostitution
For those wishing to help, if it is safe to do so and you can ask questions to the potential victim, here are a few sample questions:
- Can you leave your job if you want to?
- Can you come and go as you please?
- Have you been hurt or threatened if you tried to leave?
- Has your family been threatened?
- Do you live with your employer?
- Where do you sleep and eat?
- Are you in debt to your employer?
- Do you have your passport/identification? Who has it?
For those who are being victimized or you believe they may be a potential victim, notify the Davie Police Department or respective local law enforcement agency immediately by calling 911. In addition, the National Human Trafficking Hotline at 1-888-373-7888 can also be a resource to use.
We must all work together to strengthen our stance against Human Trafficking and end it now.
