HURRICANE IAN UPDATE #5: TOWN PARK CLOSURES AND SOLID WASTE UPDATES
No Bulk Service Today
DAVIE, Fla. – The Town of Davie's Emergency Management continues to monitor Hurricane Ian, which has strengthened into a Category 4 Hurricane and is anticipated to make landfall on Florida’s west coast sometime today. A Tropical Storm Warning remains in effect for Broward County, including Davie, which means tropical storm conditions are expected somewhere within the warning area.
While the County is still outside the forecast cone, the area will still experience heavy rains and flooding, tropical storm strength wind gusts and the possibility of tornadoes through Thursday. A tornado watch has been extended for all South Florida until 5 p.m. today.
Please take note of the significant changes to the bulk pickup schedule for today, Sept. 28 and the Town park closures and updates:
Solid Waste Services
- There will be no residential curbside bulk pickup collection for those scheduled to receive service today, Wednesday, Sept. 28 (Zone 21). The anticipated recovery date is Friday, Sept. 30.
- Residents will receive regularly scheduled curbside garbage pickup services.
- For residents scheduled to have bulk services on Saturday, Oct. 1, 2022, please continue to monitor the Town's communication mediums for any impacts on this service due to the hurricane.
- Residents should refrain from cutting trees or doing additional landscaping projects until after this storm passes.
- Coastal Waste and Recycling will complete regularly scheduled collections as long as drivers and crews can do so safely. Deteriorating weather could cause an abrupt cancellation of garbage and recycling collection service until the weather is favorable enough to resume those services safely.
Town and Park Operations
The Town has completed its storm impact assessment to determine the parks and facilities impacted by Hurricane Ian. All Town facilities excluding the following are open for public use. Listed below are the current closures. As the day progresses, the Town will evaluate the closed parks/facilities to determine whether they can be reopened.
Closed Parks and Facilities:
- Lange Park, 6550 SW 47th Street
- Liberty Park, 13500 SW 8th Street
- Marando Farms, 5151 SW 64th Ave
- Math Igler Citrus Park, 2581 S. Hiatus Road
- Oakhill Equestrian Park, 3100 SW 130th Avenue
- Robbins Preserve, 4005 Hiatus Road
- Peaceful Ridge Park (Trail), 2950 Frontage Rd
- Pine Island Park (Bamford Sports Complex) is open to the public excluding the use of the skatepark, playground, ballfields, disc golf and exercise equipment that will remain closed until determined safe to reopen.
- All recreational activities and sports programming are canceled for today.
- The Davie Pine Island Fitness and Aquatic Center is operating as normally scheduled.
- All Town operations will continue operating as normally scheduled.
- As a reminder, the Town will not be distributing sandbags at this time.
Horse Refuge Program
The Town’s Horse Refuge Program site is now open for Davie residents whose horse stalls may have been significantly impacted by Hurricane Ian. A limited number of animals can be accommodated. Stallions will not be permitted. Register now before the site reaches capacity. Drainage Preparations
- The Town's stormwater drainage division will continue to inspect and remove debris from storm drains.
- The Town’s Public Works and Capital Projects Department staff is working in coordination with the South Florida Water Management District and Central Broward Water Control District, which operates the regional and local stormwater canal systems, to lower the levels of water in these canals to allow for the system to handle additional rainfall.
- Owners of private drainage systems are asked to take the time to evaluate and clear their catch basins, swales and other drainage facilities of potential debris that may cause a blockage of the system. It is possible that during heavy rainfall, street and neighborhood drains may become overwhelmed and cause localized flooding. This type of flooding should dissipate as the rain subsides.
Broward County Operations
- The Broward County Property Appraiser’s Office will be closed today and tomorrow. Pre-filing services for 2023 exemptions is available online.
- Broward County Supervisor of Elections is closed today.
- Broward County Transit fixed bus routes, Paratransit and community shuttles will continue operating as normally scheduled. Bus operation services may be suspended if unsafe strong wind conditions are sustained.
- Broward County Public Schools and District offices are closed today and tomorrow. Afterschool activities, including field trips and nighttime classes, are canceled. Before and after school care services are also closed. Residents are encouraged to follow their corresponding school's communication updates.
Do not underestimate the force and power of flood waters. It takes just 12 inches of rushing water to carry away most cars and just two feet of rushing water can carry away SUVs and trucks. It is never safe to drive or walk into flood waters. Just six inches of moving water can knock you down, and one foot of moving water can sweep your vehicle away.
Residents are urged to remain vigilant and monitor the system's progress and updates to its forecast over the next few days. While the Town is committed to ensuring all persons' safety, we ask our residents to help by reviewing and preparing your emergency plans. Knowing your risk, getting prepared and staying informed are a few steps that one can take.
