HURRICANE IAN UPDATE #3: HEAVY RAINS AND STRONG WINDS EXPECTED TUESDAY AND WEDNESDAY

Town Operation and Solid Waste Service Updates

DAVIE, Fla. – The Town of Davie's Emergency Management is closely monitoring Hurricane Ian, which has sustained tropical storm winds extending as far as 200 miles from the center. At this time, portions of Broward County are under a Tropical Storm Watch with forecasted winds of 39-73 mph predicted for tonight through tomorrow morning.

While the County is still outside the forecast cone, the area may experience heavy rains and flooding, tropical storm strength wind gusts and the possibility of tornadic activities through Thursday.

As a reminder, the Town will not be distributing sandbags at this time. Residents are urged to remain vigilant and monitor the system's progress and updates to its forecast over the next few days. While the Town is committed to ensuring all persons' safety, we ask our residents to help by reviewing and preparing your emergency plans. Knowing your risk, getting prepared and staying informed are a few steps that one can take.

Town Operations

  • All Town operations will continue operating as normally scheduled.
  • All parks and facilities remain open.
  • Outdoor organized recreational activities and sports programming are canceled for today.

Drainage Preparations

  • As a proactive measure, the Town's stormwater drainage division continues to inspect and remove debris from storm drains. The Town is also continuing to work with the South Florida Water Management District and Central Broward Water Control District to ensure that the respective water bodies are lowered in anticipation of the potential heavy rainfall.
  • Owners of private drainage systems are asked to take the time to evaluate and clear their catch basins, swales and other drainage facilities of potential debris that may cause a blockage of the system. It is possible that during heavy rainfall, street and neighborhood drains may become overwhelmed and cause localized flooding. This type of flooding should dissipate as the rain subsides.

Solid Waste Services

  • There are no changes to the solid waste services, including curbside garbage collection and bulk pickup, for today.
  • Coastal Waste and Recycling will complete regularly scheduled collection as long as it's possible for drivers and crews to do so safely. Deteriorating weather could cause an abrupt cancellation of garbage and recycling collection service until the weather is favorable enough to safely resume those services.
  • For residents scheduled to have bulk services on Saturday, Oct. 1, 2022, please continue to monitor the Town's communication mediums for any impacts on this service due to the hurricane.
  • Residents should refrain from cutting trees or doing additional landscaping projects until after this storm passes.

Broward County Public Schools

Broward County Schools will remain open today. Afterschool activities including field trips and nighttime classes are canceled. Aftercare will remain available, and residents are encouraged to follow their corresponding school’s communication updates.

Turn Around, Don't Drown.

Do not underestimate the force and power of flood waters. It takes just 12 inches of rushing water to carry away most cars and just two feet of rushing water can carry away SUVs and trucks. It is never safe to drive or walk into flood waters. Just six inches of moving water can knock you down, and one foot of moving water can sweep your vehicle away.
