Captain Yensy Thomas began her law enforcement career as a Police Officer with the New York City Police Department in September of 2000. She was the first responder to the 911 attacks, assisting with the evacuations of the World Trade Center. In 2004, she chose to move her family to Florida and began her career with the Davie Police Department. She holds a Bachelor of Science Degree in Criminal Justice Management from Union University.
Captain Thomas was promoted to Sergeant in December 2013, where she was assigned to Road Patrol Division. In 2016, she was assigned as the Sergeant of Internal Affairs prior to her promotion to Lieutenant in May 2018.
As a Lieutenant, Captain Thomas was first assigned to the Road Patrol Division. Captain Thomas then was assigned to the Special Operations Division and was in charge of the Reserve/Auxiliary Officer Program and the Citizen Patrol Program.
Captain Thomas was promoted to Captain in 2020, serving as the commander of the Road Patrol, Special Operations, and Code Compliance Divisions. Captain Thomas is currently the Captain for the Special Operations Division.
