Susan Starkey
Councilwoman Susan Starkey has over 30 years of successful experience as a public servant, community volunteer activist, and an advocate for education, environment, and good government. She has many years of work experience in the public and private sectors. She was born in Wiesbaden, Germany to a U.S. Military family and has lived in Florida since 1955. She relocated to Davie with her four children in 1990. All her children went on to attend Davie schools. Councilmember Starkey is the proud grandmother to three beautiful granddaughters.
Public Service
- Davie Town Council: March 2001 to Present
- Davie Vice Mayor: 2003 to 2004, 2010 to 2011, 2015 to 2016, 2019 to 2020
Major Accomplishments
- Acted to weed out financial abuse, and approved new financial safeguards
- Davie currently has an Aa3 rating from Moody’s for the Town’s Water and Sewer bonds
- The Town’s bond rating was recently raised by Standard and Poor’s to AA+ with a stable outlook for the Town’s Open Space and Fire bonds
- Town of Davie recently received the Distinguished Budget Awards for Fiscal Year 2015
- Initiated Davie's “Child Safety Act” to protect children from sexual predators as well as promoting the Human Trafficking Awareness project
- New Boys and Girls Clubs have been built in Davie
- Improved Fire and Police safety by adding personnel, equipment and capital projects through a voter approved Fire Safety Bond
- Passed a Rural Lifestyle Initiative, and ordinances to preserve our rural and open space
- Saved hundreds of acres from development for parks, recreation and trails and worked to complete the voter approved Open Space Bond program
- Voted for meaningful redevelopment in the Downtown and University -Regional Activity Center and the East 441 Corridor
- Initiated a smoking ban within parks and playgrounds
- Encouraged diversity in the recreational activities provided such as the Mommy and Me classes, Pickleball, and youth programs
- In an effort to promote transparency, I have supported programs for online access to information, documents, job opportunities, and Town Departments by embracing new technologies in social media as well as access to Davie TV-Comcast Channel 78
- Promoted the Town of Davie’s Sustainable Action Plan by initiating a green solar market, and supporting water conservation and recycling programs in Davie
- Supported LEED Certified buildings and encouraged the conversion of the Town’s fleet to E-85
