The Town of Davie purchased the System I Water Treatment Plant and service system from Davie Utilities, Inc. in 1981. The wastewater system was purchased in 1982 from Modern Pollution, Inc. Currently the Department is made up of 37 employees: 32 full time, 1 part time, and 4 Customer Service employees which are under the control of the Finance Department. Our utility serves in excess of 27,000 Town residents.
The Utilities Department is an enterprise-funded department within the municipal government. The Director reports to the Town Administrator and heads a staff of Field and Plant Supervisors, Administrative Office staff, Water and Sewer Plant Operators, Field Water and Sewer personnel, and Customer Service personnel. Water meters are read by a private firm selected through an open, competitive bidding process. This firm specializes in meter management.
In 1985 a Utilities Capital Improvement Program and Bond Financing Program were initiated which provided $18,000,000 for utility construction. An expansion of the water system was completed in 1988 with the addition of a 4.0 MGD water supply wellfield and treatment plant bringing water treatment capacity to 7.4 MGD. In 1987 a $3,000,000 FDER grant was secured for the expansion of the wastewater facilities. A 2.0 MGD wastewater plant was completed in 1988 as well as an ocean outfall effluent discharge facility. In 1992 Water and Sewer Improvement and Refunding Revenue Bonds were issued for a total of $38,655,000. Another wastewater treatment plant addition was subsequently completed bringing the total wastewater treatment capacity to 5.0 MGD.
Several western areas have been provided with potable water through our special assessment program thereby ensuring that residents are receiving safe drinking water. This program is ongoing and efforts are continually underway to provide all Davie residents with potable water when requested.
Our water and wastewater plants are staffed by State licensed operators 24 hours a day. This staffing arrangement allows residents to report emergency situations during evenings and weekends and receive timely assistance should the problem warrant such action.
