Rafael Acosta is the Youth Program Coordinator at the Orange Park Community Center. In the fall of 2003, the Housing and Community Development Office launched an after-school and evening program for at-risk youth, which is designed to provide structured programs to keep at-risk kids off the streets and engaged in meaningful programs and activities.
Rafael, originally from Rochester, New York, graduated from West Virginia University with a Degree in Physical Education; and, he served in various recreational capacities in City of Virginia Beach and Morgantown, West Virginia, prior to joining the Housing & Community Development staff in Davie. Rafael was also involved in several recreational programs including the "Special Olympics" and various Programs.
Since his arrival, Rafael has garnered the support of the neighboring families and children; and, the Community Center has undergone a physical transformation evidenced by new furniture, equipment, and unique artwork created by the local children and teens. Attendance in the programs has grown significantly since the program was initiated; and, a new "Teen Center" component was recently added to complement the other programs and activities.
