Davie Partners with NSU's Common Knowledge Scholarship Foundation
for a New Reading Program
The Community Knowledge Scholarship Foundation sponsored through Nova Southeastern University, has partnered with the Town's Housing and Community Office to administer an exciting new reading program for at-risk youth.
The program provides short novels for the participants to read. Using a computer, they take on-line "quizzes" to measure what they remember about the book. Each quiz question garners them a number of "points"; and, prizes are then awarded as they reach specific"point milestones".
The rewards start out small (candy, gift cards to Subway Restaurant, school supplies, etc), and then the prizes increase in value as more points are scored. The rewards eventually progress into grand prizes, such as: CD players, basketball or footballs, etc. These incentives keep the participants interested in reading, and reading carefully to ensure that they past the Quiz to receive their prize/reward.
The first pilot program is being conducted at the Rick and Rita Case Boys and Girls Club in the Driftwood neighborhood in southeast Davie. The Club members are participating as "team"; and, they are trying to win an ice cream party, by scoring more points than members from another competing Boys and Girls Club.
The program was developed at NSU's Fischler School of Education and Human Services, and uses the simple principle of rewarding participants for doing the right thing. As each student reaches the required point milestones, they are rewarded in front of their peers. These rewards motivates the other kids to want to join the program.
Once the pilot program at the Rick and Rita Case Boys and Girls Club is completed, other youth centers and programs will be asked to participate. The goal to make reading fun, easy and rewarding for all involved
