Councilmember
Susan Starkey—District 3
Councilmember Starkey and her family moved to Davie 14 years ago because of their love for open space and quality education. Susan has been an activist advocating for 23 years for the environment, education, children and family issues. She has also been a councilmember since March 2001.
Locally, Councilmember Starkey has been an active member of the Silver Ridge Elementary School Advisory Committee, Indian Ridge Middle School PTA, and Soroptimist Club of Davie. She has served on the board of directors and as president of the Broward County League of Women Voters. Additionally, Councilmember Starkey has served as a member of the Broward County School Board Blue Ribbon Committee to promote adequate funding for county schools and has served as the vice chairperson and as a member of the Broward County School’s Facility Task Force to build quality school facilities.
Councilmember Starkey is currently on the Board of Directors for the Broward League of Cities and has served on a number of county committees, such as education, environment, homeland security, and international relations. In addition, she serves on Broward County’s Water Advisory Board, Airport Advisory Task Force, and Human Relations Board.
Councilmember Starkey is passionate about environmental issues, especially relative to the Everglades and the wetlands. This is evident in her unceasing efforts to ensure that Davie acquire lands for open space and wetland purposes: the Van Kirk property, Vista View, and Math Igler. She has testified before federal, state, and local authorities supporting preservation and has worked with other organization, such as the Everglades Coalition of Broward County, the Audubon Society, and the Sierra Club.
Our children’s education is also one of Councilmember Starkey’s hallmarks. She is a staunch believer in ensuring that children have all the tools to succeed. This is clear by her involvement in a myriad of school endeavors, including the Silver Ridge Reading Lab and the afterschool book club, which she coordinated.
Councilmember Starkey is married to Jerry and has four children.
