Art with a Heart
On Tuesday mornings at 9 a.m., a special group of arts and crafters named Hearts and Crafts meet at the Pine Island Multipurpose Center in Davie to knit and crochet items that are donated to various non-profit and volunteer organizations. In addition, the items they create are available for purchase on the days the group meets and are also sold at various craft fairs in the area. All proceeds are used for supplies and to purchase food that is donated to Hope Outreach Centers and to Kids in Distress.
The group knits and crochets newborn caps and isolette covers for premature babies at Memorial Hospital West and Plantation General Hospital, as well as hats and sleep caps for cancer patients who receive them at the Moffitt Cancer Center or via the Head Huggers organization. The Hearts and Crafts group makes booties, bibs, washcloths, bath sets, and receiving blankets for the Pregnancy Crisis Center and the Hope Pregnancy Center. Afghans, blankets and ear warmers are made for Project Linus in Orlando, Warm up America, American Legion and Sunland Center. Last spring, 245 afghan squares were sent by the Hearts and Craft group to a school where the students assembled them and donated the afghan blankets to homeless and needy families.
The group always appreciates donations of knitting and crocheting needles, clean yarn and fabric so that they can continue their mission of donating their wares to the many organizations in need. For information on donating these items or about this group, please contact Betty Daly at 954-327-3941.
