Davie, May 6, 2008: The second annual Davie and Cooper City Girls’ Recreational Fast Pitch Softball All Star game for the 16-and-Under (16U) Division was held at Bamford Sports Complex on May 1. The two recreational leagues play each other throughout the regular season, and then both leagues pick their best to represent their towns in the All Star game. Davie won this year’s game, 12-2, making up for last year's loss to Cooper City. Mayor Truex attended the event and threw out the first pitch. “It’s exciting to see the competitive sportsmanship that these young ladies demonstrate on the field. I am proud to be a part of it,” declared Mayor Truex.
Davie's first two pitchers, Courtney Maine and Erica Lewis, pitching the first and second innings respectively, got Davie off to a quick start, each only facing three batters. Davie scored once in the first, and then opened up in the second with a five-run inning, the last two runs coming on a double from Courtney Maine. Seven Davie players combined for 13 hits, and Brittney Smythers and Erica Lewis both went 3 for 3, all singles. Missy Havens pitched twice for Cooper City and only gave up one run. Davie's pitchers only gave up two hits, a single to Jessica Simonpietri in the third and a single to Danielle Gruelmes in the fourth.
The decorated field, announcers, music, and a ceremony made it a special event for all the players and families. There was excitement in air, as the ladies battled it out on the ball field, representing their respective towns.
