Davie Receives Award at BHP Breakfast
The Broward Housing Partnership (BHP), the private, not-for-profit group that promotes affordable housing, released some results on March 20, of a new report that was conducted by Florida International University Metropolitan Center. Awards were given out at a breakfast meeting at the Broward Center for the Performing Arts. The portion of the report that ranked cities based on their efforts to formulate plans to meet the needs of everyday workers placed The Town of Davie as one of the top two municipalities in Broward County.
The Housing Market Analysis and Municipal Scorecard consisted of an analysis of municipal policies, practices, programs, housing units produced, and legislative initiatives as they relate to affordable and workforce housing. Broward’s 31 municipalities were involved.
Shirley Taylor-Prakelt, Davie's Housing and Community Development Director accepted the award on the Town's behalf and said that “She is very proud of the Town's achievements in developing affordable and workforce housing, and the Town Council's approach to considering proactive solutions to the affordable housing crisis.”
The Town Council appointed a Housing Task Force that spent one year studying the housing crisis and developing a wide range of recommended solutions. Davie is one of the first municipalities to consider adoption of an omnibus affordable housing ordinance that includes the establishment of an Affordable Housing Trust Fund, Inclusionary Zoning, and other proactive approaches to ensure that Davie residents have adequate and sustainable housing that they can afford. Other items recommended by the task force are under consideration and will be discussed by the Town Council in the near future.
