In 2006, the Florida Department of Agriculture Division of Forestry awarded an Urban and Community Forestry Hurricane Grant to the Town of Davie. This grant was awarded in order for the Town to assess and restore tree canopy lost as a result of the 2004 and 2005 hurricanes. The Town is proud to announce that it has completed the projects associated with this grant. These projects included the inventorying of all Town-maintained trees and planting of 48 trees.
The Town conducted an assessment of those trees maintained on Town-owned property and right-of-way. Approximately 8,800 trees were located using GPS (Global Positioning System) and features such as the tree type and current condition were collected. Town staff will maintain this inventory as trees are planted or removed. Furthermore, this information will be utilized to create reports to assist staff members in identifying what species to plant, which trees should be removed, and what treatments are needed on existing trees. The inventory can be viewed under the “Map Us” link on the Town of Davie website, davie-fl.gov.
The Town planted 48 trees on the Pine Island Road and Nob Hill medians. Some of these trees are replacements for those lost during the most recent hurricanes. The types of trees planted include live oak, gumbo limbo, royal Poinciana, dahoon holly, wild tamarind, bald cypress and mahogany. These trees are primarily native and drought tolerant species.
The Town wishes to extend its thanks to the US Forest Service, the Florida Department of Agriculture Division of Forestry, and its State Representatives for providing the grant’s technical and financial support.
