Every year, Town of Davie employees volunteer time to help children in Headstart reading programs at local Davie schools: Davie Elementary, Driftwood
Elementary, and Flamingo Elementary.
The Town's Housing & Community Development Department partners with the Headstart Program to implement the “Love To Read, Love To Achieve” reading program. The goal of this program is to promote men as reading role models for four and five year old students in Headstart classrooms who typically only see females as their reading role models.
The program will run from March 17 to March 27. The Davie volunteers will be reading at selected schools between 9 a.m. and 9:30 a.m. Davie Housing & Community Development Department Director Shirley Taylor-Prakelt says, “This program has been very successful in the past and has been of mutual benefit to the male volunteers and to the kids in the Headstart classrooms. The Davie volunteers make a great impression on the children and become a reading role-model to them.”
